A Question For Native Portlanders
Star Rating - 2/19/2007
So why is it that many Portlanders will not speak to you on the street? My wife and I have noticed it happens all the time. You're walking down the sidewalk, you approach another person going the other way. You say "hi" or "afternoon" and the Portlander gives you this blank look and then stares at the ground and quickly rushes by. Why do they do that?

We've lived in Miami, LA, Alabama, Charlotte... but in Portland, Oregon why do you get such a cold reaction?

Well, from personal experience I know that some Portlanders are that way, and it is because they are usually shy and hard to warm up to with new people. On the other hand, I have seen a few Portlanders come up to me out of the blue and ask me for the time or directions, and I was a bit taken aback, but I was happy to oblige! You gotta understand that most Oregonians, on the West side at least, are somewhat reclusive and require a warm rapport with people before being as comfortable with others. I should know, as I am a native Oregonian for 30+ years, living elsewhere, who has lived in Portland for over a year and has friends there. It's nothing personal, it's just the way we deal with
